Instructional Setting:



Standard classroom. 20-25 students. A whiteboard will be at the front of the classroom as well as a projector to show computer presentations.


 

Your State Core Curriculum/Student Achievement Standard(s):



 Indiana State Standard  USH 5.3 Identify and describe key leaders and events during WWII



 Indiana State Standard  USH 9.3 Identify multiple causes of historical actions and analyze cause/effect relationships.


 

Lesson Goal(s):



Students will learn the leaders of the Axis powers in World War II as well as their ideals and motivations. They will also learn key vocabulary terms and the main events that led to WWII.


 

Lesson Objective(s):  



Given a list of leaders and countries, students will be able to correctly match the leader with the country with 100% accuracy through assigned homework.



Given a list of terms, students should be able to identify vocabulary terms with 90% accuracy through assigned homework.

Sequence of Instructional Procedures/Activities/Events (provide description and indicate approximate time for each):


 

1. Identification of Student Prerequisite Knowledge and/or Skills: 



Students will have learned about the Great Depression and its effects on American ideas of intervention. They will need some new background knowledge on Europe at this time to allow them to fully understand how leaders like Hitler came to power.



2. New  Knowledge and/or Skills To Be Taught:



 Terms and definitions, leaders and their countries, policies in Axis countries.



3. Modeling:  I Do (30 minutes)



I will lecture and show a PowerPoint with the main points from the section as well as background information the students should know, including the rise of each leader mentioned and the circumstances that led to their gaining power. I will also show a video of PM Chamberlain.



4. Guided Practice:  We Do (10 minutes)



 There will be class discussion throughout the instruction to clarify missed concepts as well as to flesh out the material and the students’ understanding, including how Hitler rose to power in Germany and what circumstances allowed for this to happen,



5. Independent Student Practice:  You Do (15 minutes)



 Students will be given a homework assignment which they will have some time to complete in class.



6. Culminating or Closing Procedure/Activity/Event: (5 minutes)



 Students will have the opportunity to ask any final questions before the end of class and I will inform them of what will be expected next lesson.

ELL and special needs students will be given maps with important cities marked so they can visualize what is happening at this time in history.

      SmartBoard will be used to display the lesson notes.

Students will have a homework assignment where they will define key terms with 90% accuracy as well as match each leader during World War II with the country they led with 100% accuracy.
