Learning Goals
Learning Goal 1: Students will learn the leaders of the Axis powers in World War II and their ideals. This aligns with Indiana State Standard USH 5.3 Identify and describe key leaders and events during WWII (IDOE, 2009).
Learning Goal 2: Students will learn about American isolationism and its effect on American’s views of World War II. This aligns with Indiana State Standard USH 4.8 Describe the cause and effect of American isolationism during the 1930s, and Indiana State Standard USH 5.2 Describe key events leading to US entry into WWII (IDOE, 2009).
Learning Goal 3: Students will learn about the immediate and long-term effects of World War II. This aligns with USH.5.6 Describe the impact of WWII on US culture and economic life, and USH.5.4 Describe Hitler’s “Final Solution” and identify Allied response to the Holocaust (IDOE, 2009).

Learning Goal 2:

My unit of study will be World War II. The students will have learned about the end of World War 1, the Great Depression, and Roosevelt’s New Deal when I begin my unit. My unit consists of eight lessons covering the rise of Hitler to the creation of the United Nations. These lessons will show the students how the leaders involved in World War II came to power, the sequences of events that played out over the decade, the effects of war on America’s stance of isolationism, and the eventual victory of the Allied powers.
My first learning goal is for students to be able to correctly identify world leaders during World War II and their ideologies. It is crucial for the students to know who led what country. It is also important for students to understand what motivated these leaders to pursue the policies and actions they did. The learning goal will be addressed in the first lesson, where students will learn the leader of each country and how he came to power.
My second learning goal is for students to understand and describe the policy of isolationism. Students will learn how Americans felt after the first World War, and how the lingering effects of the Great Depression made Americans not want to interfere elsewhere when there were still troubles at home. Students will also learn how the attack on Pearl Harbor forced American’s into war, and how they accepted this and rose to the occasion. While most of the action up to this point in history has taken place in Europe, it is important for students to see how Americans saw these events.
My final learning goal is for students to learn how World War II affected immediate and long-term policies. We will spend one lesson entirely focused on the Holocaust. While it is not directly related to United States History, it is a crucial moment in global history that affected American foreign policy. We will also learn how the United States and the Soviet Union rose above other countries after the war and became the first world superpowers. These students will have lived their lives always knowing America was the world superpower, but may not know how that came to be.
While these learning goals were taken from the state academic standards, they are goals I would have created even without standards. World War II was a huge turning point in United States History. It is essential that students learn about it and its effects on everything that came after it. These learning goals and objective ensure the students receive a full, deep education on the topic.
