What challenges have you faced and how are you overcoming them?
A challenge that I face is having to understand the concepts of the lyrics I want to interpret. For example one song I was playing around with is "Act up" by City Girls. In the song she says " Act up , you going to get snatched up". At first I was really confused because I don't know what that meant. One could literally interpret this as " to act-point up, you, to snatch up" but for some reason I felt like it could have a lot of different meanings. For example it could mean " to snatch some ones hair", to get snatched up and someone tries to date or marry you, to get into a fight, to be abducted, etc. There are so many meanings this could have. This is really indicative of the interpreting process because we constantly have to make sense of what is being said. That is an overall challenge all interpreters face. How can you interpret a lecture on biochemistry if you don't understand what is being said. One way of solving this is taking class, doing prep work and researching the video and having background or connect to the communities you are interpreting for. Interpreting for someone who is part of the LGBTQIA+ community can be entirely different that interpreting for a conservative religious cult leader. But just because we may not be apart of either community doesn't mean we cant fight for the right of equal access. Another thing is that sometimes the way things are interpreted may seem "ugly" just like when writing music or songs it may not sound write. Or if you are writing a paper and something may not sound right. That means back to the drawing board and keep troubleshooting until you are satisfied.
