Instructional Policies:
1. As a professional student, you are responsible for all work covered in class. You are responsible for calling the instructor in advance of an absence to report your absence and reason. You are responsible for obtaining any hand-outs or information given in class if you are absent.
Attendance and Tardiness (CTEL policy 2006)
1. If you are ill, have a family emergency, or some other situation that requires your absence from class, you are expected email or phone giving your reason for your absence before you are absent. As class time is used to help you learn, being absent usually results in less learning and lower achievement. Therefore, there is a point penalty for excused and unexcused absences that may affect your final grade.
Tardiness is not acceptable. It interrupts class activities. The tardy student misses part of the class learning experience. Moreover, tardiness is not acceptable professional teacher behavior. Teachers cannot be tardy to their classes. There is a point penalty for each tardy.
Frequent absence and tardiness is not acceptable professional behavior. Besides affecting your learning and your final grade, frequent absence and tardiness is justification for a personal improvement plan.
2. Since group discussions and shared learning are an important part of this class, please make it a high priority to be well-prepared, to attend, and to participate in discussion. Class participation will be assessed on attendance (2 points), timeliness-on time/full time (2 points), and participation in class (2 points). Each class equals 6 points for a total of 48 points. Students are expected to sign in for each class prior to the beginning of instruction. If you are not present in the classroom when instruction begins, or if you leave class before dismissal, you will lose points for timeliness. Unexcused absences will result in a loss of all class participation points for that class session. Unexcused absences will be those that are not considered by the instructor to be an unavoidable emergency or serious illness or when notification has not been provided prior to the absence. Excused absences will require you to make up all work missed during your absence. If the class work missed cannot be made up because it involved group participation, you will need to complete a comparable assignment that will be provided by the instructor upon your request to cover the content missed. This makeup work will be due the next day class is in session following your absence. If this comparable assignment is not completed by the following class session, no points will be earned for class participation as a result of that absence even though it may have been an excused absence. It is your responsibility to inquire about the need to complete this comparable assignment. All required readings should be completed by the date assigned.
3. Work submitted should be of college/professional quality, and appearance. All assignments should be typed, double spaced (unless otherwise specified), checked for spelling, sentence construction, grammatical errors, and clarity.
The course grade pre-service teachers earn is based on a total of 100%. At the end of the semester, each pre-service teacher’s points will be tallied and academic achievement grades will be assigned based on the following scale:
90-100%=A
80-89%=B
70-79%=C
>69%=D
Assignments will be due on the dates specified on the course schedule unless dates are modified by the instructor. Assignments not submitted by the due date will receive “no credit.”
Academic Integrity
The absolute highest standards of academic integrity and ethical conduct are expected of all university students and is a requirement of this course. Violations of academic integrity include, but are not limited to, cheating, fabrication, tampering, plagiarism, or facilitating such activities. Deviations on any graded activity will not be tolerated. “Plagiarism” means, knowingly or unknowingly, using another’s words, ideas, materials or work without properly acknowledging and documenting the source. Students are responsible for knowing the rules governing the use of another’s work or materials and for acknowledging and documenting the source appropriately. Academic dishonesty will result in a grade of “E” or “XE”. Please check ASU’s Academic Integrity Policy for student obligations, guidelines for evaluating academic dishonesty, sanctions, and guidelines for reviewing a decision of suspension or expulsion from the university. The grade of “XE” denotes failure through academic dishonesty and may not be appealed through the grade appeal process. The grade of “XE” shall be recorded on the student’s transcript with the notation “failure due to academic dishonesty.” The grade “XE” shall be treated in the same way as an “E” for the purposes of grade point average and determination of academic standing.

Cell Phone Policy
The faculty members in the College of Teacher Education and Leadership (CTEL) understand that students have busy lives with multiple professional and personal obligations. These obligations have resulted in a sharp increase in the use of cell phones and other communication devices. In this course, all cell phones and/or communication devices are to be turned off or placed on vibrate only during class. Should an emergency occur that requires use of the cell phone or communication device, quietly exit the classroom completely prior to responding to the device.
Accommodations for Students with Special Needs
The Disability Resource Center (DRC) provides information and services to ASU West students with any documented disability. Individualized program strategies, specialized equipment, as well as current information regarding community resources are available for students. Once you have registered with DRC, please contact the instructor for accommodations that are necessary for the completion of this course.
