Prerequisite(s): Completion of Block 2
Catalog description: Rationales for instructional curricula; alternative curriculum designs and broad-based content; selected topics in school governance, finance, and law.
Course Description:
Overview of the course: As students advance through their program, their concerns and information needs gradually shift from the classroom to broader contexts that affect the classroom. Curriculum is one of these needs. Whereas other elementary education courses provide pre-service teachers with study of specific curricula, this course is intended to broaden students’ understandings through exposure to larger curricular issues. Why is the single subject curriculum the norm in most elementary schools? Can the Arizona Academic Standards fit within alternative curriculum designs? What is character education and how does it fit school curricula? Explorations of answers to these questions are the study topics for the first half of EED 414.
Although pre-service teachers will engage in field experiences in both blocks 1 and 2, they will become more independent in student teaching and need additional information about schools prior to this experience. Consequently, selected topics in school governance, finance and law form the content for the second half of the course in block 3. Awareness of schooling alternatives, inequities in funding, and rights and responsibilities of students are examples of important information included in this course. With this knowledge, novice teachers are expected to understand their roles and responsibilities within the organization and as part of schools.
