WORD CHOICE –

            -are there carefully chosen words to enhance the essay?

            -does the paper show attempt to vary word choice rather than repeating?

            -does the paper improve with vivid language?

ORGANIZATION –

            -does the paper stay focused on its thesis?

            -does the paper use a variety of transition phrases?

            -does the paper have a clear opening, body and conclusion?

SENTENCE FLUENCY—

            -do the sentences and ideas flow smoothly throughout?

            -does one idea flow into the next?

VOICE—

            -can you hear the opinions and feelings of the writer in this paper?

            -are inferences made following quotes and citations or is this paper just a series of quotes without

  writer’s inferences and examination of quotes?

CONVENTIONS—

            -is the paper free of spelling errors and grammatical errors?

            -if the paper has a few errors, does it keep you from understanding the content?
