Standard 12: Working alone, or with arts specialist teachers and/or other qualified arts professionals, elementary teachers are able to integrate the arts into the elementary curriculum.
Context: I created and taught this unit in Martha Saffer's sixth grade class at Blue Ridge Elementary. I collaborated with Ms. Saffer and two of my university professors to develop this collection of lessons. I also explored the internet for ideas, but many of the activities and lessons are completely original. Impact: I will constantly be planning and teaching units in my classroom. I will rely on specialist teachers, the Standard Course of Study, and my own creativity to develop fun, integrated lessons that my students will enjoy. Alignment: I have met the following NCDPI standard:
Standard 12 because I integrated art into my unit on the World Wars and the Holocaust. My students gained a more broad understanding of this time in the world's history by examining the art that was prevalent at the time. In this instance, I integrated art into the elementary curriculum by myself, but I have built cooperative relationships with the specialist teachers at my school, and can rely on their expertise in the future.
