Indicators 1, 4, 5

Context: I took a semester-long course entitled Foundations of Literacy during my Spring 2005 semester.  In it, I learned how to teach reading, interpret a child's writing to discern in which stage of development they are, and ways to make literacy enjoyable and meaningful for each student.  My artifact is a collection of article responses that I wrote to assigned articles we read outside of class.  I took notes so that I could refer back to the information throughout the year, as I teach language skills to my students.

Impact: When I teach, I will need good information about the best ways to teach literacy and encourage my students to become confident, informed users of language.  These article reflections will be a valuable tool for developing meaningful strategies to teach language skills and encourage students' enjoyment of reading.

Alignment: I have met the following NCDPI standards:

Standard 8 -

  • Indicator 1 because my notes include information about building a balanced instructional program that combines many elements of literacy.  The articles discuss the importance of letter/sound relationships, context, and meaningful text.
  • Indicator 4 because the articles discuss fun and interesting ways to make reading enjoyable for students who are struggling with literacy.  The articles are an amazing resource for making reading a pleasure.
  • Indicator 5 because the articles cover a variety of different genres and provide information about making them all accessible and appropriate for students.
