Indicator 1, 7

Context: I included a service learning activity in the unit I taught on World Wars I and II in my Block II internship with Martha Saffer at Blue Ridge Elementary.  The entire sixth grade competed in a Penny Wars to raise money that was donated to Saint Jude Children's Research Hospital.

Impact:  As a teacher, I will plan creative ways to involve my students in the community and world as a whole.  This service learning opportunity was a great time to do something worthwhile to help another group of my students' peers, while applying it to the lessons we were learning in social studies.

Alignment: I have met the following NCDPI standards:

Standard 16 -

  • Indicator 1 because the students were involved in raising money for an organization outside of the classroom.  Throughout the process, I also developed as a leader in the school, involving multiple classes and grades in the fundraiser.
  • Indicator 7 because I encouraged student participation in a volunteer activity, and it was a huge success!  The students became motivated and took the project even further than I ever imagined - it was an amazing experience!
