Indicators 2, 3, 5

Context: I collaborated with two of my classmates to complete this social studies exam in Dr. Eric Groce's Social Studies Methods class.  This exam was designed to test our competnce in the area of social studies.

Impact: I will constantly be relying on my own knowledge to teach social studies to my class, and this exam is proof that I understand the concepts I will be teaching, and a good resource for me to review in the future.

Alignment: I have met the following NCDPI standards:

Standard 4

  • Indicator 2 because in my exam, I discuss the rights and responsibilities of democratic citizenship, citing the Bill of Rights and listing the responsibilities that are involved in being a contributing member of society.  I also discuss the interdisciplinary nature of social studies, examining the history, geography, economics, political science and religious studies of social studies.
  • Indicator 3 because in my exam, I discuss the progression in the social studies curriculum from self and family all the way to nation.  I also included an explanation of Paul Hanna's work and how his research has shaped our modern education system.
  • Indicator 5 because my classmates and I decided to create a visual representation of a national holiday.  We created an Independence Day mobile, and hanging from each hanger are pictures of events or elements of the Fourth of July, and each picture is accompanied by an explanation on the back.  I now have a better understanding of this national tradition, and this craft activity is one that I can use when I become a teacher.
