Context: I created and taught this unit in Martha Saffer's sixth grade class at Blue Ridge Elementary. I collaborated with Ms. Saffer and two of my university professors to develop this collection of lessons. I also explored the internet for ideas, but many of the activities and lessons are completely original.
Impact: I will constantly be planning and teaching units in my classroom. I will rely on veteran teachers, information sources like the internet, and my own creativity to develop fun, integrated lessons that my students will enjoy.
Alignment: I have met the following NCDPI standards:
Standard 7 -
- Indicator 1 - because I used the curriculum from the Standard Course of Study to guide my lessons, addressing all the pertinent goals and objectives and integrating multiple subjects into each lesson.
- Indicator 2 - because each of my lessons integrated multiple subjects, ensuring that my students were constantly making connections between language arts, social studies, art and technology.
- Indicator 3 - because I took suggestions and feedback from my students and used them to guide future lessons. I also had students complete an initial assessment at the beginning of my unit, allowing me to compile information that they already knew and build on it.
- Indicator 4 - because I utilized multiple teaching strategies throughout my unit, like individual, partner and whole group work, discussion, lecture, independent research and presentations. I also communicated in a variety of ways, through my own writing, group sharing, lecture, music and art.
- Indicator 6 - because I included modifications throughout all of my lessons, allowing me to adapt my instruction or directions to meet the individual needs of each student.
- Indicator 7 - because I assessed my students in a variety of ways, including an initial assessment, daily informal assessments, journal writing, a Jeopardy game, and a final assessment quite similar to the first.
