Indicators 5, 6

Context: I collaborated with one of my colleagues, Melissa Kirkman, to create a learner diversity project about homosexuality.  This was done as part of my Learner Diversity class during my Spring 2005 semester.  Melissa and I put extensive research into creating a collection of solid information that could be used by many teachers to increase the tolerance and acceptance of others, particularly homosexuals.

Impact:  As a teacher, I will encouter a variety of people, religions, values, beliefs, and cultures.  Having a good source of information to guide the decisions I make will help me to feel prepared and educated to foster tolerance in my classroom.

Alignment: I have met the following NCDPI standards:

Standard 14 -

  • Indicator 5 because having a collection of information will help me to rely on facts, rather than myths or stereotypes, therefore increasing bias-free instruction and eliminating prejudice or anger.
  • Indicator 6 because I have included a section that discusses how to teach homosexuals, or students from a family structure touched by homosexuality, in a way that makes them feel valued, accepted, and normal in our society.
