Service Learning

Context: I completed this service learning project with three classes of sixth grade students at Blue Ridge Elementary.  I was assisted by my cooperating teacher, Martha Saffer, and the other sixth grade teachers.

Impact: Learning through service is an effective teaching strategy, and I will use projects similar to this in my classroom.   Doing this project has prepared me for future projects like it, because I have reflected on its successes, failures and elements that I would change next time.

Alignment: I have met the following NCDPI standards:

Standard 4

  • Indicator 11 because this experience has taught my students the value of being a responsible citizen, giving to the community and the importance of perseverance.

Standard 7

  • Indicator 4 because I used service learning as a method of instruction, teaching my children about the interconnectedness of human life and the importance of putting a sense of value in others.

Standard 11

  • Indicator 3 because we talked as a class about how our money would go to research for cures, new technological advancements for patients and would perhaps even save the lives of children like them.
