Indicators 3, 4

Context: I planned, designed and taught four consecutive math lessons during my student teaching experience at Green Valley Elementary.  The lessons were taught in Angie Austin's third grade class at GVS, and they dealt with graphs (bar graphs, tally charts, pie charts, pictographs).

Impact:  As a teacher, I will plan creative and engaging math lessons for my students, building on prior knowledge and teaching in a methodical, sequential manner.  I will collaborate with veteran teachers, research ideas from the internet and written text and use feedback from my students to improve my lessons.

Alignment: I have met the following NCDPI standards:

Standard 2 -

  • Indicator 3 because the students and I used symbols and models throughout our exploration of graphs.  We also constructed tables to explore relationships and interpreted the data we had constructed to glean meaning from abstract models.
  • Indicator 4 because the class systematically collected and recorded their data (on the favorite colors of their classmates) then used various different methods to record the same set of information.  We created graphs, charts, tables and grids and used them to analyze the information we had gathered.
