Standard 13

Standard 13: Working alone, or with healthful living specialists, elementary teachers create opportunities for student development and practice of skills that contribute to good health.

Context: I planned, designed and taught a health lesson on families during my Health Education in the Elementary School class at Appalachian State Univeristy.  The lesson was taught to a group of my peers during my Spring 2005 semester.

Impact:  As a teacher, I will plan creative and engaging health lessons for my students, building on prior knowledge and teaching in a creative, age-appropriate manner.  I will collaborate with veteran teachers, research ideas from the internet and written text and use feedback from my students to improve my lessons.

Alignment: I have met the following NCDPI standard:

Standard 13 because this lesson allows students to practice telling an adult that a family member isn't treating them in a healthy, respectful or appropriate manner.  This lesson encourages students to develop good health practices by being aware of the roles their family members should play, and this heightened sense of awareness will keep them protected and safe.
