Demonstration

Context:

This assignment was created under the instruction of Jeff Goodman for GS 4401: Science and Science Technology in Elementary Schools.

The demonstration was done for a group of after school students at Appalachian State University as a part of the course.  The demonstration later will be useful in introducing a new concept to students to enhance their interest in the topic.

Impact:

The impact on the students of this demonstration was the development of their interest in learning more about what the demonstration is actually showing, and the scientific concepts behind it. The students were able to practice the process skills of observation, and are then able to relate that through out the further explorations with the specific chemical concepts.

Alignment:

Standard 3: Indicator 2: Teachers have knowledge of basic physical science concepts including:

  • Factors affecting chemical reactions

This indicator is met by the display of the knowledge behind the scientific concepts of the demonstration.  The demonstration works because of the chemical reaction between the milk and vinegar.

Standard 15: Indicator 1: Teachers use a variety of strategies to encourage under represented groups to engage in the schooling process, especially math and science. They:

  • Use relevant and real-world applications that interest a diverse population

The demonstration meets this indicator because it is an activity that allows the teacher to reach all diverse populations of students by engaging them in a presentation and allowing their interests to grow in the concepts being explored.
