Video Production

Video Rationale

Context:

This video was created for CI 3750, Integrating Media and Technology into Teaching, Spring 2007.  It was created under the instruction of Mary Rogers.  The video is based on the book The Berenstein Bears and the Sitter.  It was created as a collaboration with four other classmates: Jessie Guynn, Katie Greene, Laura Lackey, and Lindsay Gibson.

The technology that was used includes a digital video camera, Itunes, and Imovie, and Microsoft Word.  The video is designed for lower elementary grades and incorporates literature as well as media.

The video was made with the use of handmade sock puppets who followed a script adapted from the book.

Impact on Student Learning:

The video was designed to give a visual representation of a children's book which helped to combine technology and language arts/reading.

The project was an example of a video that students could create on their own or in small groups.  The video would be based off of current reading materials and then shown to the class.

Alignment:

This video met the following North Carolina DPI Elementary Education Specialty Area Standards and the National Educational Technology Standards (NETS) for All Teachers:

NC DPI Standard 6, Indicator 1: Teachers understand the basic vocabularies, materials, techniques, and thinking processes of each arts discipline (art, music, theatre, dance).

  • This indicator was met by the use of theater in the making of the video.  Sock puppets were handmade, incorporating art.

NETS-T I-B: Teachers demonstrate continual growth in technology knowledge and skills to stay abreast of current and emerging technologies.

  • This standard is met by the use of Imovie and the digital video cameras.

NETS-T II-D:Teachers plan for the management of technology resources within the context of learning activities.

  •  This standard is met by planning how the video activity could be managed with elementary students.  After reading a new book or novel, the students could take turns in groups in creating their own video after learning how to use the cameras and Imovie.

NETS-T VI-B: Teachers apply technology resources to enable and empower learners with diverse backgrounds, characteristics, and abilities.

  • The video project is designed to let students with all different talents excel in their creativity.  Arts, music, and theater all come to play in the video production, as well as writing skills in writing the script.  The video project allows students who excel in all different areas explore their talents in video production.
