Context:
This assessment was completed as a part of RE 4030: Development of Literacy for Learning instructed by Dr. Ellen Pesko.
The assessment was performed on a third grade student at Westwood Elementary School in Ashe County. The assessment and interpretation was a part of the internship that was done at that school. Following the assessment, an interpretation of results was done to classify the student's abilities.
Impact:
The assessment was designed to give teachers an idea of what level of reading and comprehension a student has mastered. With this information, teachers can create a list of books that are useful for this student as well as develop instruction based on the needs of that student. The assessment specifically tests the reading ability of students based on the speed of their reading, the accuracy of the words the student is reading and the comprehension of the student based on what the student has read.
This assessment was used on one of the third grade students in my internship classroom, and I hope to use it later in my teaching career to help students achieve the desired reading level.
Alignment:
The following standards and indicators were met by the use of the assessment, as well as the interpretation of the results:
Standard 1: Teachers know the developmental stages of language acquisition.
Standard 1: : Teachers know and understand that reading is taught as a process of constructing meaning through the interaction of the reader’s existing knowledge, the information suggested by the written language, and the context of the reading situation.
