Science Safety Survey

Context:

This assignment was created under the instruction of Jeff Goodman for GS 4401: Science and Science Technology in Elementary Schools in the Fall of 2007.

The survey is set up as a questionnaire and checklist for teachers to make sure that all appropriate equipment is in the classroom and is ready for use.

Impact:

When students are working with science materials in the classroom, it is very vital that they know how to use tools properly and also that they understand where all of the emergency tools are located.  If a teacher is aware of the placement of all safety equipment in the room, they are able to show these things to the students and teach them of their proper use.  It is important to understand that teachers must first be familiar with the classroom in order for the students to understand their importance.

Alignment:

Standard 17:  Indicator 1: Teachers ensure that safety issues are included in instruction and provide supervision during lab activities and field experiences.

This indicator is met by the survey by the questions including asking the location and ensuring the presence of all safety materials and equipment.  This provides teachers with a base to teach these things to the students.

Standard 17: Indicator 2: Teachers analyze the lab/activities for safety and research materials/chemicals to know safety issues before they are used.

This indicator is met by the questions in the survey because they specifically ask for the locating of each of the safety materials.  By performing the survey, teachers are aware of the presence of the materials and have analyzed them for use.

Standard 17: Indicator 3: Teachers have a working knowledge and comply with the science Safety Laws, Codes, and Standards.

This indicator is met by the survey because it makes sure that teachers are aware of the laws, codes, and standards by having them check for things that are specifically required.

Standard 17: Indicator 4: Teachers model and communicate appropriate safety behaviors.

Teachers are able to model the safe behaviors after they have located all of the equipment and made all of it aware to the class.

Standard 17: Indicator 5: Teachers develop a short and long-term plan for improvement of school safety.

After performing the survey, teachers are able to notice the placement of the equipment and develop plans and strategies for their use and share these with the students.
