Ms. Gordon has lead professional development activities in her role as the Career and Technical Department chairperson, as the Family and Consumer Sciences lead teacher at Hayfield Secondary School, and as a VA State Trainer for the Virginia Teachers for Tomorrow program. Documentation of leadership roles in these activities is attached.
Active participation of an instructor at the school, county, and state levels enriches a program due to the knowledge obtained, awareness of new resources, and networking possibilities. On the school level, being Hayfield's elected representative to the Superintendent's (Dr. Jack Dale) Advisory Committee for over 5 years now, the responsibilities include attending monthly meetings as a staff advocate. Likewise at the school level in the role of CTE department chairperson since 2005, responsibilities include attending School Council meetings and providing feedback and leadership to the 23 other CTE department members.
At the Fairfax County level in the role of Education for Employment (EFE) instructor since 2005, attendance at the EFE lead teacher meetings and FACS middle and high school lead teacher meetings quarterly is expected. Likewise as a member of the FCPS Financial Literacy committee representing CTE, the responsibility is to offer direction to the development of the Economics and Personal Finance class which will be a mandatory graduation requirement for all students who are freshmen after 2010. Education for Employment has a financial literacy component in the curriculum in which students prepare a personal budget for independent living based on career options.
Participation in the 2008 Virginia CTE Strategic Visioning Project committee involved providing feedback to the State regarding the futuristic direction of career and technical education in the Northern Virginia region. Regional task forces were held across Virginia and a survey was conducted by the Meeder Corporation, a third party research group.
