Take out a piece of notebook paper and a pen or pencil and follow the steps below as well as answer the questions

1.) Click on this link to head to the first website: http://www.bbc.co.uk/schools/ks3bitesize/science/organisms_behaviour_health/life_processes/activity.shtml

Once on this website watch the video!

  • What are the seven life processes?

2.) Head to the following website we are going to explore the life processes a little more in depth:  http://www.oum.ox.ac.uk/thezone/animals/life/index.htm

On this website you are going to meet MRS NERG who also goes by MRS GREN sometimes. MRS NERG or MRS GREN is a mnemonic device to help you remember the seven life processes.

3.) Click into Movement

Read about movement is and answer the following questions:

  • What allows human to move?
  • Not all animals move like humans do name how three different move.
  • What is an invertebrate?

Go to the following website to explore a little more about what movement is. http://www.bbc.co.uk/schools/ks3bitesize/science/organisms_behaviour_health/life_processes/revise6.shtml

You should be starting in section 6 and read through section 8

Section 6 explains why you need a skeleton

  • What are the three main functions of the skeletons? How does the skeleton accomplish each of these functions?

Section 7 is all about joints read about joints and their function in the skeleton

Section 8 is about Antagonistic muscles. Muscles help some organisms move read about this type of muscle

3.) Head back to this website  http://www.oum.ox.ac.uk/thezone/animals/life/index.htm,  Click into Reproduce

Read about reproduction and then answer the following questions:

  • Why do organisms need to reproduce?
  • How do frogs reproduce?
  • How do organisms like sponges reproduce? What type of reproduction is this?

4.) On the same website Click into Sensitivity

Read about sensitivity and answer the following questions:

  • Sensitivity is not a feeling in this case, what does it refer to?
  • What are the five senses?
  • Describe an animal found on this page and how it uses its senses.

5.) On the same website Click into Nutrition

Read about nutrition and answer the following question on nutrition:

  • What does nutrition refer to?
  • This page does not mention it but plants need to eat too! Do you know the name of the process they use  in order to get nutrients?

Click on this link and view the video, Photosynthesis: Overview of Reactions, to learn more about photosynthesis http://www.wwnorton.com/college/biology/discoverbio4/_core/ch/08/animations.aspx

6.)Head back to,http://www.oum.ox.ac.uk/thezone/animals/life/index.htm, Click into Excretion

Read about excretion and answer the following question:

  • What is excretion?

7.) On the same website click into Respiration

Read this section on respirtation and then answer the following qustion:

  • Every organism respires even the cells in your body! So what is respiration?

**Note: It is important to  remember respiration is not breathing, this may sound confusing but look at this video below on what cellular respiration is and you will see why respiration and breathing are different **

Click on the last link Aerobic vs Anaerobic respiration found on the following website: http://www.wwnorton.com/college/biology/discoverbio4/_core/ch/08/animations.aspx

As you can see from the video respiration is chemical processes, we will learn more about respiration (Glycolsis, the Kreb's cycle, and electron transport chain) at a future time

8.) Lastly head back to http://www.oum.ox.ac.uk/thezone/animals/life/index.htm and click into Growth

Read what about growth and answer the following question:

What is growth?

9.) Now that you know what the seven processes of life are take the quiz offered on this site and if you get a 100% please show me the results then you can continue then you you can continue, otherwise you need to review the processes again!

10.) Now I want you to go to these website, on these websites you will learn all about sponges: http://tolweb.org/treehouses/?treehouse_id=3431; http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BW05vMziy2o ; http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2002/04/0401_0401_shapeoflife1.html

You know that an organism must exhibit life processes in order to be considered "alive" so is a sponge alive? Give me atlest five reasons as possible as why a sponge is or isn't living. You will blog about why you think a sponge is or isn't living in the comment section then respond to two other students blogs with your own comments!
