Reflection

The purpose of this lesson is for students to practice summarizing text with citations. The learning target for this lesson is: Be able to identify the main idea of the story, along with key supporting details. Prior to starting the activity, students built background knowledge on the overarching theme of the text. Students created their own definitions based off of discussion/visuals vocabulary words surrounding the environment. The materials needed for this lesson was the Wonder’s online program, student journals, Wonder’s Anthology book, and graphic organizer.

Students read together, taking turns in the reading circle. In checking student’s prior knowledge on what was learned the day before the activity, I had students complete a circle map on the genre and make predictions. Using technology helped facilitate student learning prior to the activity – since the Wonder’s program is online. The materials had also helped facilitate real world connections, based off of the listening comprehension section and visual aids.

The activity instructed students to summarize “The Stewards of the Environment.” Throughout the reading I asked students comprehension questions where they had to cite. By the end of the reading, as a class, we had fully summarized the reading. Ultimately, if students paid attention and listened to directions they were setup for success. I differentiated the lesson for my focus student by using a tree map to organize the details of the text. The focus students were able to meet the learning target by finding three key details. The whole class needed to cite and find the main idea and three details. Overall, I believe it is highly essential to incorporate technology, a variety of strategies, and engaging activities within a lesson. It helps to keep students on their toes and ready to learn!
