Context: This service learning project was created for CI 3110 during Block II in the Fall of 2007. It was created under the advisement of Dr. Allen Bryant and was implemented in a third grade classroom at Blue Ridge Elementary School under the advisement of the classroom teacher, Mrs. Heather Parsons.
Impact: This service learning project was a classroom project to contribute four full boxes along with a few other individual toys to Samaritan's Purse's program Operation Christmas Child. Students participated in this service project and developed an understanding of their role in the community pertaining to volunteering and serving others. They also were shown the connections between themselves and other people in the state and world, and the importance of volunteering.
Alignment:
Standard 4, Indicator 3--This indicator was met because through the service project, the teacher demonstrated the connection between the individual students and their own community, the state, the nation, and even the world.
Standard 16, Indicator 1--This indicator was met because the service project was an activity that students participated in outside the classroom. It taught students about leadership and service within the community.
Standard 16, Indicator 7--This indicator was met because the teacher encouraged the students to participate in a volunteer activity through the class service project of working with Operation Christmas Child.
