Context:
I completed my Student Teaching Internship at Dillard Drive Elementary School in Spring 2008. Dillard is part of the Wake County Public School System in North Carolina. I worked with a third grade class under the advisement of Mary Jo Lentz of Appalachian State University and cooperating teacher Susan Sherron.
Impact:
This Student Teaching Internship has further promoted my professional development and has also allowed me to effectively assess and assist students in my classroom. By being informed of the proper procedures as well as being aware of special services and how to use them within the school, I have become more apt be serve the needs of any child that comes into my classroom. I have further learned what it means to be an elementary teacher and all that teaching encompasses.
Alignment:
Standard 16, Indicator 2: This indicator was met during student teaching because of the many meetings I attended. I attended faculty meetings, leadership meetings, SST (Student Support Team) meetings, IEP meetings, parent-teacher conferences, school improvement team meetings, PLC meetings, team meetings, and a variety of others.
Standard 16, Indicator 3: This indicator was met during student teaching because I communicated with parents through letters, in the classroom with parent volunteers, and at parent-teacher conferences.
Standard 16, Indicator 6: This standard was met through welcoming teaching observations by both my cooperating teacher and Mary Jo Lentz, my student teaching supervisor. After every observation I met with the person observing me to discuss and reflect upon the lesson, the instructional delivery, and my teaching methods. This was done in order to grow and improve in my teaching.
Standard 16, Indicator 9: This standard was met through attending PLC meetings and team meetings, as well as through informal discussions and collaboration with the teachers at my school. The purpose of these meetings, both formal and informal, was to strengthen the instruction delivered to students.
