Context:
This unit was created for CI 4900, Student Teaching, Spring 2008. It was created under the advisement of my cooperating teacher Susan Sherron. These lessons were taught at Dillard Drive Elementary School in March 2008.
Impact:
This unit was designed to prepare students for an upcoming field trip to a cotton plantation. The lessons focused on the agricultural product of cotton and taught students about the process cotton goes through, from seed to product. Students were presented with many hands-on materials to aid in their understanding of cotton agriculture and manufacturing.
Alignment:
Standard 11: Elementary teachers connect social studies with the broad curriculum.
-Indicator 3: This standard was met because students learned about how the technological innovation of the cotton gin impacted the production of cotton in the South and ultimately impacted United States history.
-Indicator 5: This standard was met because students were taught about the different stages of the cotton plant and the cotton-growing process through the use of a PowerPoint presentation.
