Health

Context:
This lesson was created for HED 3645, Heath Education in Elementary School, Spring 2007. It was created under the advisement of Mr. John Janowiak.

Impact:
This lesson was written for third grade students. It can be used to both teach and encourage students to engage in a healthy lifestyle by choosing nutritious snacks in their appropriate portion size. In the lesson, students are taught the difference between a serving and a portion. Students also are presented with a variety of options for healthy snacks.

Alignment:

Standard 5: Elementary teachers have an understanding of the major concepts of healthful living.
• Indicator 1: This indicator was met because the lesson was aimed at helping students build a foundation and understanding of a healthy lifestyle; specifically relating to making healthy choices in the types and amount of food they consume.
• Indicator 2: This indicator was met because in order to write and teach this lesson, teachers need to have an understanding to major health issues related to children; specifically the child obesity problem present due to the plethora of unhealthy foods consumed by children.

Standard 13: Working alone, or with healthful living specialists, elementary teachers create opportunities for student development and practice of skills that contribute to good health.
• This standard was met because the teacher had to collaborate with Mr. Janowiak, a health specialist, to design a lesson that taught students about the development of good health skills pertaining to making healthy snack choices. Also, in the lesson, students are given the opportunity to practice measuring out correct serving sizes of various snack foods.
