Classroom Webpage

Classroom Webpage Rationale

Context:

This classroom webpage was created for CI 3750, Integrating Media and Technology into Teaching, Spring 2007. It was created under the advisement of Mary Rogers.

A webpage directed at parents, students, and other community members was created in order that the teacher may introduce themselves as well as give information regarding their classroom. It also includes a calendar of events and a homework page, as well as places for parents and students to go for homework help or extra scholastic practice.

Impact:

This webpage provides the teacher with another method of communicating with parents. It helps parents and students keep track of important information (such as homework assignments and important dates) more easily. It also provides parents with another picture of who the teacher is. Another important impact on students pertains to the support through homework helping websites.

Not only does this webpage have a pragmatic impact, but it also demonstrates the teacher's dedication and connection to their students. It shows parents that the teacher views the parental role as important, and includes parents in their child’s education.

Alignment:

  • NETS-T II-E:This standard deals with enhancing student learning in a technological environment. It was met because the student pages provided on the classroom webpage encourage students to utilize technology (specifically computers and the internet) to receive extra help and practice with schoolwork.
  • NETS-T II-C:This standard deals with evaluating technology on its suitability. It was met because many websites had to be examined before the ones included on the classroom webpage were chosen. Not only did they need to be appropriate, but they also had to be evaluated for how helpful the site was in context of what it was needed for, as well as how easy (or difficult) the website was to navigate.
  • NETS-T V-A: This standard deals with using technology to maintain professional development and learning. It was met because the classroom webpage is a newer and more efficient way to convey information to parents and students. The webpage also includes some research and sites that facilitated the teacher’s learning and that will hopefully do the same for parents and students.
  • NETS-T VI-A:This standard deals with teaching the ethical usage of technology. It was met because the websites included in the classroom webpage were found in an ethical manner and were properly cited. Also, by providing websites, students who follow the provided links are safely and ethically using the internet. Also, many of the websites provided, deal with technological issues, including safety and ethics; in fact, there is an entire part of the classroom webpage devoted to media literacy. By going to these pages, students learn even more about the ethical and proper uses of technology.
  • </FONT> NETS-T VI-C:This standard deals with identifying and using diverse technology resources. The websites provided on the classroom webpage come from a variety of places and cover multiple topics (some even regarding diversity).
  • NETS-T IV-B: This standard deals with collecting and analyzing data and communicating it to others. It was met through the media literacy survey. The survey includes not only the survey itself, but also outside research, the results of the survey, and a critical evaluation of the survey and results. By including this on the classroom webpage the teacher effectively communicates the issues covered by the survey to parents, students, and other community members.
  • NETS-T II-B: This standard deals with using current technological research (specifically regarding education) to plan learning experiences. It was met through the various media literacy issues brought up in the classroom webpage. This is especially the case with regards to the media literacy survey that is displayed. The results of the survey (along with all of the other media literacy information provided on the webpage) may be used in teaching technology and its effects and usage regarding learning.
  • NETS-T V-B:This standard deals with evaluating and reflecting on professional practice in order to better use technology to support learning. It was accomplished through the many media literacy websites provided on the classroom webpage as well as the media literacy research and survey that is also included. By researching media literacy, teachers gain a better understanding of how to use technology to aid in student learning. The importance of media literacy is shown, as well as ideas as to how to integrate technology and learning.
