Context
During my Block I semester in the spring of 2007 in CI3750 class, I did a project called “Video/iMovie” in which a group of five classmates and I made a video based on the book The Teacher from the Black Lagoon.
Before we began filming the video, we learned all about video cameras and how to use them. We learned how to use the digital video camera, tripods, and different shots. We learned about jump shots, still framed shots, and zoom in and out shots. Then, we shot sample videos to practice. After that, we discussed with our group which book we should act out. We decided on The Teacher from the Black Lagoon. We read through the book and made a storyboard as a script. While taping the video, we used the resources around our campus.
After finishing taping the video, we went into the Technology Lab to import the video on to a Mac. We used iMovie as an editing program. We split the video clips and deleted the audio sound from the clips. We used transitions between the scenes. Then, we used iTunes to add music and sound effects in the background. One of the last editing tasks was adding a voice over. One of the members of my group narrated the book.
When the editing process was done, we compressed the file to a QuickTime file. Then, we burned the video to a CD to turn into the teacher. We added the video to Task Stream. Lastly, we presented it to the class.
Impact
This project taught us how to use video cameras and how to make videos. As a teacher, I feel that I can use this as a teaching tool. In my classroom, we could make a video to make a video biography of the classroom. Also, we could use this project as a project in the classroom. We could make a video to act out a book or subject that we are studying. Videos are a great way to teach students ideas. For example, a video could be used to teach the Pledge of Allegiance.
Alignment
While doing this project, I met multiple DPI Standards and NETS-T Standards. I met standard IB by using iMovie to create a state-of-the-art video production. We used the very latest iMovie (installed in December 2006) to create and edit our video. I also met standard IID by using the technology resources around me. I used digital cameras and video production equipment. I also learned how to use a digital video camera, tripod and learned ways to take car of my video camera tape. When I have my own classroom, I can use this knowledge to teach my students how to make videos. I met standard VIB by using iMovie too. This program teaches a very hands-on method that appeal to diverse learners. It uses a variety of senses and is very interactive and engaging. This will keep the attention of LD or ADHD children and all levels of learners. I reached DPI standard 6, indicator 1 by making a storyboard before filming the video. We used two art disciplines, visual arts and theatre arts. We used iMovie for the visual arts and by acting out the book, we used the theatre arts. I met DPI standard 12 by learning how to integrate technology with the arts. I connected these by using computers and iMovie for the technology and graphic and visual arts of drama and video production for the arts.
