Rationale for the Multicultural Project- Latinos
DPI Standard 14, Indicator 1,4,5,6
Context:
For this project, I worked with two other girls and we researched about Latinos. We all had part in the project. We learned about the Latino population, common stereotypes, Latino Literature, famous Latinos, classroom activities for Latinos, and Latino agencies. We compiled all the information and put it together. By doing this, it helped me learn a little more about the Latino culture. These projects are supposed to be references for teachers.
Impact:
This portfolio will be very useful in the classroom. It includes lots of valuable information for teachers. It was supposed to be very informative for teachers who are teaching students. The Latino literature section includes write ups about books and also includes lesson plans that can go along with the books. These books will come into use when teaching Latino students or teaching about the Latino culture. There are also classroom activities included in this portfolio that will help to incorporate Latino culture into the classroom. There are many Latino agencies listed in the portfolio too. If I have a Latino parent that might need advice or help, I could recommend an agency that might help them out.
Alignment:
While doing this project, I was able to hit all of DPI Standard 14’s indicators. I reached Indicator 1 by learning more about their culture. This will help me to understand my students’ families and backgrounds. I also listened to my other classmates while they gave their presentation on other diverse cultures. There are many organizations that I found that helped with educating Latinos. I found classroom activities that incorporate Latinos and by doing this I was able to find ways to have discussions on controversial issues. There are many Latino books that I read to the class that can help me do this. These books cover many problems and experiences that some Latinos go through. There was a stereotypes section to my project. While finding common stereotypes of Latinos, I also found information that proved the stereotypes wrong. Stereotypes have a political side to them and by knowing more about the truth, I will be able to understand and teach children of diversity better. The books that I have incorporated in this project also taught me about and made me recognize the family roles that this culture plays. All of this covers Indicator 4 and 5. I feel that this entire project helped me hit Indicator 6. I was able to find educational information for Latino students and parents and by doing this; it will help me effectively teach Latino students. DPI Standard 4, Indicator 1, was met by including data from current research to indicate the knowledge that I’ve gained about the Latino population and historical accomplishments and contributions
