It is important that students are aware of what is going on in the classroom. Teachers must determine what they want the students to accomplish after each lesson has been completed, and inform the students of the set goals. Teachers and students must be working together and moving toward the same goal. Writing specific objectives for each lesson allows students and teachers to clearly identity what direction they need to be moving. These objectives that teachers construct must follow the school and district curriculum as well as meet Ohio’s academic content standards.
The content standards set a solid base of what teachers need to cover in a school year, however it is up to the teachers to decide how to teach it. Teachers need to teach in a way that that supports the learning needs of all of their students. Gifted students, students with disabilities, and at-risk students cannot be forgotten about; teachers need to work to deliver instruction that will continue to challenge every student to reach their fullest potential. The amount resources that teachers have available with today’s technology is outstanding. Teachers must use these resources to the students’ advantage.
One way standard 4 can easily be applied to the classroom is by posting the objectives for the students to see somewhere in the classroom or in the students’ notes. It is great idea to start each class off by stating or posting the objectives for the day; students are able to start thinking about the topic and then know what is expected of them for the day or week, depending on the lesson and objective. The objectives must be progressive for every student. Teachers must assess students to ensure that each student is advancing in the classroom and working toward the set goals.
