A few weeks back students gave presentations on geologic Eras, Periods and Epochs. In the Pleistocene Epoch lived the woolly mammoth. This ancient, extinct relative of the elephant is of interest to science as its frozen remains are increasingly being found, possibly due to global warming, and it represents a possible animal that can be resurrected through cloning. Using the internet or other sources, research this extinct animal and answer the following questions in complete sentences. Answers should be typed. Indicate the source of your answer. If the internet was used, copy and paste the URL beneath each answer. If you do not have a printer, save your answers to a flash drive and print at the school library or other location.
1. What modern day elephant is the woolly mammoth most closely related to?
2. What mammal (warm blooded animal) was the first to be cloned?
3. What was its name?
4. Name two scientists or organizations that are attempting to clone the Mammoth.
5. There are 3 main methods being used to attempt to clone the mammoth. Name one of them and give a brief description (paragraph) of the procedure.
6. The cloning of organisms is becoming more common as time goes by. Name three animals that have been successfully cloned.
7. In what geologic Era did the woolly mammoth exist?
8. How long ago did they die out and what are two reasons why according to scientists?
9. What adaptations did the Woolly mammoth have that allowed it to survive in the cold?
10. If the cloning of any extinct animal is successful, what are three positive outcomes that can come from the new technology?
