Rationale for Artifact Four:  Ethics of Computers

Context

In class we defined acceptable use policy to be a contract among the student, parent, and teacher that says that the student will obey the rules of the computer lab.  I have included an example of an acceptable use policy from Valle Crucis Elementary School.

On the internet I looked at the Hoaxbusters website sponsored by the CIA.  The web address is http://hoaxbusters.ciac.org/.  The website lists many different kinds of hoaxes and what you can do about them.

In class we looked at a handout titled “Copyright in an Electronic Environment”.  This handout gives guidelines for using copyrighted materials.

I saw a power point presentation titled “Copyright Laws and Fair Use Policy: What You Need to Know as a Future Teacher.” This Power Point presentation included information on fair use policy and copyright information.  I included a copy of the Power Point slides in my portfolio.

The last part of this artifact is a handout entitled, “Citing Electronic Resources in APA & MLA Style.”  This is a reference that details how to cite sources such as web pages and emails.

Impact

Each year I will send home an acceptable use policy with my students and I will have them and their parents sign and return them before using the computers at school.

When I teach, I will make sure that my students don’t propagate chain mail and hoaxes.  We can use the hoaxbusters website as a reference to see if emails are true or if they are hoaxes.

It is important that I make sure that my students follow copyright laws.  After seeing a PowerPoint Presentation and reading about copyright laws through the two handouts mentioned above, I feel confident in helping my students adhere to copyright laws.

Alignment

I have met NETS-Competency VID because I understand acceptable use policy and have an example to follow when I begin to teach.  I also can use the Hoaxbusters website as a reference.

I have met NETS-Competency VIA because I now understand how to teach my students to use a computer in a legal manner.
