Rationale for Social Studies Lesson on Uniqueness
Content
Under the advisement of Dr. Eric Groce, I created a lesson plan for a kindergarten class that teaches the students the importance of being different and unique. It involves the reading of a visually inviting picture book that allows students to explore the inner qualities that makes us all unique and special along with an artistic expression of a self portrait and a game that allows students to express what they like about their classmates along with what they like about themselves.
Impact
This lesson provides me the practice of writing out a formal lesson plan and being able to implement it with a classroom full of students. As a future teacher I know that I will not be able to write out formal lesson plans for every activity but by having the experience of writing a lesson plan out I am aware of the important pieces that makes a lesson successful. Through the teaching part of the lesson I was able to actually put a lesson plan to use and develop classroom management strategies that will be helpful to me as a full time teacher.
Alignment

I have met NCDPI Standard 7: Indicator 7 because I assessed the students by periodically asking them questions and through the presentation of their drawings.
I have met NCDPI Standard 11: Indicator 1 because I have incorporated communication throughout my lesson in the presentations and the game at the end of the lesson.
I have met NCDPI Standard 11: Indicator 2 because I have included art in the lesson and discussed with the students the importance of being able to express yourself either through art, music, drama, or some other type of outlet.
I have met NCDPI Standard 12 because I integrated art into the elementary curriculum by having the students express themselves through the drawing of a self portrait.
