Math Lesson Plan (Lucky Charms Graph)

Context:  This unit was created for CI 3030, Invest Math and Learning, Spring 2007.  It was created under the instruction of Dr. Tracie Salinas.

This unit includes the lesson plan that was taught to Mrs. Quesenberry's Kindergarten class at Moravian Falls Elementary.

Impact:  This unit was designed to help reinforce graphing objects and being able to read what they had just graphed.  The students were each given a sandwich bag of Lucky Charms marshmallows.  The students were asks to graph the number of  hearts, shooting stars, pots of gold, green hats, and rainbow that they had in their bag.  They were to then color in the bar graph according to the number of marshmallows that they counted.

Alignment:  This unit met the following North Carolina Standards for Elementary School Teachers:

Standard 2:  Elementary teachers have a broad knowledge and understanding of the major concepts in mathematics.

  • Indicator 1:  Teachers have a knowledge of number sense, numeration, and numerical operation.

- This standard was met by allowing the students to count the number of marshmallows they had and color in the same number of boxes in the bar graph.

Standard 7:  Elementary teachers use developmentally appropriate strategies to design and deliver instruction in all areas of the elementary curriculum.

  • Indicator 1:  Teachers develop and implement the pacing and alignment of curriculum that is consistent wit the NC SCOS, LEA standards and pacing guides, and national standards in all subject areas.

-This standard was met by using the NC SCOS to plan the math lesson.

Standard 9: Elementary students understand and use the processes of problem solving, reasoning, and proof, communication, and representation as the foundation for the teaching and learning mathematics.

Indicator 5: Teachers develop instruction in representation that enables students to:

Create and use representation to organize, record, and communicate mathematical ideas

I met this standard by providing the students with a graph to transfer their findings (number of marshmallows)
