Context: This lesson was created while student teaching Spring of 2008. It was taught in Mrs. Karen Gilbert's second grade class at Hudson Elementary.
Impact: The lesson was designed to show the students the ways in which people in different cultures express themselves. The forms of expression the lesson focused on were music, art, literature, and dance using the Japanese, Irish, and African cultures. By showing them pictures of art, videos of dances, and samples of music from each culture the students are able to see and hear the differences in each culture rather then being told that they are different.
Alignment: This lesson met the following North Carolina Standards for Elementary Teachers.
Standard 6: Elementary teachers have a basic understanding of the basic concepts of the arts.
Indicator 1: Teachers understand the basic vocabularies, materials, techniques, and thinking processes of each arts discipline (art, music, theatre, dance)
I met this indicator by discussing the differences between each cultures use of material in their music and art.
Indicator 2: Teachers have an informed acquaintance with exemplary works of art from a variety of cultures and historical periods.
I met this standard by telling the students that some of the dances and music have historical meaning.
Standard 11: Elementary teachers connect social studies with broad curriculum
Indicator 1: Teachers incorporate communication in their lessons.
I met this indicator by going over the way in which many cultures communicate their cultures through language and literature.
Indicator 2: Teachers enhance students understanding of the humanities
This indicator was met by exposing the students to various types of literature, dance, art, and music.
Indicator 5: Teachers incorporate technology skills in their social studies lesson through collecting data, organizing and sorting data, and displaying data in a variety of ways.
I met this indicator by using a power point slide show, music, and videos from the internet to show different ways that cultures express culture.
Standard 12: Working alone, or with arts specialist teachers and /or other qualified arts professionals, elementary teachers are able to integrate the arts into the elementary curriculum.
I met this standard by showing students videos of different dances and listening to different forms of music and discussing how they differ.
This assignment met the following NETS-T technology standards for NC standards
NETS-T III : Teachers implement curriculum plans, that include methods and strategies for applying technology to maximize students learning.
NETS-T III A: Facilitate technology-enhanced experiences that address content standards and student technology standards.
I met this standard by using a power point on the smart board to show different examples of expression.
NETS-T III B: use technology to support learner-centered strategies that address diverse needs of students
I met this by using a CD to let the students hear the difference in the music, used youtube to let them see different dances, and power point to see different paintings.
NETS-T III C: apply technology to develop students' higher order skills and creativity.
I met this by asking them how the songs were different, what different instruments did they hear, and what was different in the way they made their art, what different materials they saw used.
NETS-T III D: manage student learning activities in a technology-enhanced environment
I met this standard by using all of the different types of technology in one class. They were able to see all of them in action and how they are able to use them to get information.
