The Oral Presentation

  1. A 10-minute presentation (followed by 5 minutes for questions and answers)
  2. 10-12 PowerPoint slides
  3. The presentation must be organized as outlined below
  4. For the oral presentation, you will be assessed based on the attached rubric (see tab on the left)

 

Organization of the PowerPoint Presentation

Subheading/Slide

Content (use bullet points rather than full and lengthy sentences)

Title Page

State the title of the presentation, the date, name(s) of presenter(s), and affiliation(s).

Introduction

Provide a brief background to the topic, thesis, research question or problem that you are focusing on.  In other words, make clear the context of your oral presentation, and show its relevance and significance to the audience. Why should they be interested in your work?

Objective

Briefly state what you intend to achieve by giving this oral presentation. What is the purpose of your presentation? You may have broadly stated this in the introduction, but you must be specific in this slide.

Rationale

Why is this literature review and oral presentation worthwhile? What is the potential impact (value or usefulness) of the literature review and oral presentation? You must be specific. Who could benefit and how?

Methodology

Address the following:

  1. The criteria used for selection of the peer-reviewed articles (e.g. according to your objective, you may have searched for articles based on a particular research design, theory, topic, intervention, subgroup, etc.)
  2. The sources of the research articles (mention the specific databases, journals, and other sources that were searched, and the key words/phrases used in the search)
  3. Explain how the common themes/patterns across the research articles/studies were determined.

Results

Present the key findings/themes (from the literature review)  in relation to your topic, thesis, research question or problem.

Discussion

Restate the key finding(s), and offer plausible explanations, as well as support from the peer-reviewed literature (for and against). Comment on the strengths and limitations of the basic literature review you conducted.

Conclusion & Recommendations

Summarize the key findings, and  explain what they mean and imply in terms of:

  1. Practice of the discipline (behavioral science, psychology, sociology)
  2. Education 
  3. Further research

List of References

List, using an appropriate referencing format, all the sources cited in your presentation.
