Culturally Relevant Teaching/Diversity

Two teens (Lg.)

One area of education that many educators may over look is diversity education. By incorporating diversity in many areas of the environment, educators are setting students up to become more tolerant and understanding adults, and it allows for students to get to know both their own as well as other students backgrounds. Diversity can be incorporated into virtually any lesson, as well as made prominent in decorations and materials made available to students on a day to day basis. It is important for educators to avoid taking what is commonly known as a "tourist" approach to diversity by focusing on stereotypical topics at certain times of the year, and rather teach relevant day to day information that students can keep for a lifetime.

Day to day when any student enters a classroom, they should feel that their backgrounds as individuals are recognized, and they should feel safe sharing who they are without fear of judgement or prejudice. This can only be achieved through the guidance of a trusted adult and teacher.

AntiBias Checklist

Checkmark (Lg.)

Below you will find the links to download a summary created after the completion of an AntiBias checklist in a Pre Kindergarten classroom. AntiBias checklists are useful tools for educators because it allows for reflection on how well the classroom incorporates diversity into the classroom community.
