Head Start Program

Head Start Programs provide services for families with low income. Their services include not only education but also nutrition and healthy habits. Head Start programs also provide services to children who qualify as homeless or have been diagnosed with various disabilities.

New York State Universal Pre Kindergarten Classroom

The idea of Universal Pre Kindergarten is that children who are old enough to enter the program should be allowed to enter and learn even if they have a low family income. During Early Childhood Block I, I observed in a UPK classroom at Delaware Academy of the Syracuse City School District. This district is a High Needs School with children who qualify as having a socioeconomic disadvantage. Despite having these disadvantages in income, they are provided with a free and developmentally appropriate education.
