Critical Reflection:

Even though this is my very first placement in a classroom, I have discovered that I have found many things within the Cortland Child Care Center that I like as well as things that I would stray away from in my own classroom environment.

Something that I love about the Child Care Center is the resources that are available, specifically in the Waddler room in which I was placed. The room has fairly new looking toys and books and is maintained to look new and beautiful. The classroom is very child centered with chairs and tables for the children, as well as containing a rug area and reading area with a large couch-like area to read comfortably.

Something I was not happy with was my host teacher’s attitude. While I understand that being a professional in the early childhood field is stressful, she was not very open to my being in the room. While she was nice to me when she actually talked to me, she rarely attempted to engage in conversation or participate when I tried to engage her.

Something I was happy about however and liked about the classroom was the structure. The structure of the day was lose and revolved around play, however there were set times for eating and nap time. The day was guided by the adults in the room, but children had the opportunity to participate in any games or toys they wished.

Three and/or Four Year Olds

Program:

Syracuse City PreK Program, Delaware Academy

            900 South Geddes Street

            Syracuse NY, 13204

Hours: 79

Critical Reflection:

Doing my practicum hours for Early Childhood Block I at Delaware Academy in Syracuse, NY, provided me with new and valuable experiences that I can take away with me to my next placement.

Being placed in an urban school was a very different experience for me. I had never had the opportunity to observe in a classroom where many of the children and teachers speak Spanish. While I know enough Spanish to understand and communicate very brokenly, it has shown me that before I continue on to one day have my own classroom, it would be beneficial for myself and for my future students for me to learn to be more fluent in a Spanish speaking classroom.

I could not have asked for a better host teacher. She was patient and helpful not only to her students but to me as well. She gave me advice and opportunities to grow. The only thing I would have changed about the welcoming classroom environment is the way the adults confronted problem behavior. Often times the adults would confront problem behavior not necessarily with anger but with frustration. I think slightly more patience would go a long way in a Pre-Kindergarten classroom.
