Boycott Blues: How Rosa Parks Inspired a Nation

boycott_blues.jpg

This is an example of an audio story created through the iMovie application on an iPad device. Although it is infact an audio story, it is important to note that this was created with visuals as well. This combination of visuals and audio make this audio story an example of how someone may create a movie for a classroom. On the same application that this was created on, a teacher has the option to add pictures and audio. This means that an educator or students have the ability to take pictures from a lesson or from a book, and voice over them. This allows teachers to take lessons and turn them into a movie that students may view any time they wish. By using applications such as iMovie, teachers can create useful tools for classrooms, provide alternatives for children with disabilities, and assess students on their ability to use these tools. Movie and audio tools such as these are important for educators to become familiar with because they may be easily integrated into a UDL classroom environment. The tool is geared towards students who learn best through visual and audio cues, but is engaging for students of all learning styles.

Tools such as these help educators to show their competence in the use and design of technology for the classroom. This fulfills Standard 2 of NETS for All Teachers, because it shows competence in the design of a tool to be used in a classroom setting.

The story used here depicts the events of the Montgomery Bus Boycott, and outlines the role Rosa Parks played in this event (Pinkney, 2008). This audio book was created for an anticipatory set related to the Montogomery Bus Boycott and the Civil Rights Movement. The book may easily be differentiated for students from first all the way to sixth grade, and is set to teach the character traits of "Heroes and Sheroes" through historical figures.
