Students in the Computer Information Systems Program are given many opportunities to help them explore and develop pathways for the future.
Each year we host an Open House where students and parents have the opportunity to come and visit the school, the classroom, and the instructor. During the open house communication about what the program has to offer is clearly presented to the parents. Brochures and PowerPoint projects are available to the parents and the students.
Students in the program have the wonderful opportunity of taking the course as a dual credit option with Mountain Empire Community College. One advantage to the dual credit opportunity is that all students who enroll in the dual credit option are able to take the college entrance exam for free. Also, the students are able to take the college credit course at 10% of the cost.
Our school also works with a Career Coach program which offers students in all fields information on what work force and educational opportunities are available to students.
Each year we invite all upcoming high school students to tour our school and each program. This allows the upcoming students to see what programs are available to them as they enter high school.
Along with our open house and other opportunities students are offered, our school also hosts a College Day where all Senior and Junior students are given the opportunity to talk with college representatives about course offerings, scholarships and other vital information on the pathway to college.
We also offer the ASVAB test free of charge to all seniors and juniors. This assessment assesses strengths and interests for all students.
Artifact 35 -Document collaboration with school counselors/career coaches on academic and career plans
School guidance counselors are an invaluable resource in our school. Our guidance department provides many opportunities for students, teachers, and the parents of students.
Each year the guidance department works with every program in our Career Center to make sure that students are placed in their correct course and if their course load is in compliance with their Individual Educational Plan (IEP) if one applies.
The Guidance department provides an array of communication through a variety of formats such as parent and teacher conferences, emails, progress reports and a new program we are using known as PowerParent. This program allows parents to have instant access to their child’s attendance, grades and discipline reports. It also requires teachers to have three days to post of test and grades after the student has completed an assignment.
Students also work with the guidance counselors and the career coach with information on colleges and receive preparation materials on the SAT and ACT college test. The career coach and the guidance counselor can also help students schedule the test.
At the beginning of each student’s senior year, guidance counselors conduct senior interviews. Each student is required to complete this senior interview before the end of the first grading period of their senior year. The interview covers information such as personnel portfolios requirements, course requirements for graduation and college information. If a student is lacking any course requirements at the beginning of their senior year, the interview process is conducted in a timely manner where the course requirements can be met and the student can graduate in the spring.
The guidance counselor along with the career coach, also offers an abundance of information on scholarships and grants that are available to students. It is very important that the guidance counselors and career coach works with every program in our school. These two areas of our education enhance the academic and personal success of every student.
