My parents thought I was too serious of a child, one to not say much. However, one way that I did express myself and I continue to do so is through music. As early as 3rd grade, I have been involved in choir, mainly liturgical music. From 3rd to 5th grade, I sang in the children's choir at my parish. Then, from 6th grade to senior year of high school, I sang in the youth band at my parish. I sometimes go back and join the band when I can. The choir directors, Dr. Joe and Kim, supported me and mentored me. Choir definitely provided a space for me to grow and break out of my shell. I fought past the awkward voice cracks and my shy composure. I eventually found courage to cantor at masses by myself. I took active leadership in the mass by being a cantor. The youth band also provided a great community of creativity and openness.

In addition to liturgical choir, I was a member of the Indianapolis Children's Choir (ICC) for several years. ICC, one of the largest children's choir in the nation, inspired my involvement in musical education and artistic expression through music. In the fall of 2010, I traveled with ICC to New York City and performed in Carnegie Hall as part of an international children's choir. That is an experience I will never forget as I sang in a prestigious concert hall.

At Loyola, I continue to be involved in music ministry. Loyola offers a 9 pm Mass in which the choir and band provides contemporary, upbeat music for the congregration. The9, as it is called, is a supportive community in which I can use my talents. I am one of 5 cantors for The9; thus, about once a month, I lead the congregration in song. This experience has developed my leadership style and made me more open to expressing myself. The picture above is from the Music Ministry Retreat, in which The9 built community and rehearsed for the upcoming year. The picture below is of me singing at the Baccalaurete Mass with the choir.
