Campus and Community Involvement

For my Spring Break, I went on an alternative break immersion trip to Pine Ridge, South Daktoa. The Pine Ridge Indian reservation is home to the Oglala Lakota Sioux tribe of Native Americans. Beyond the beauty of the rolling hills and the Bandlands, there is a splendid beauty in the culture and community of the Lakota people. Facing challenges of poverty, alcoholism, suicide, political corruption and more, the Lakota people offer great hope through their spiritual practices and sense of family and community. I met with community members and worked with students and teachers at Red Cloud Indian School, a Jesuit-run Elementary and High School that seeks to promotoe Lakota and Catholic values among the youth. I was deeply moved by the spirituality, compassion, and humility of the Lakota people. I am grateful for this opportunity. My heart was broken for the Lakota people because of the injustices they experience. Yet, my heart received great joy from the love and hospitality of the Lakota people.
