Leadership Profile on Lisa Jerzyk, Director of Volunteer Relations

“The Christian leader of the future is called to be completely irrelevant and to stand in this world with nothing to offer but his or her own vulnerable self.”-Henri Nouwen

Listening, professionalism and vulnerability—these three qualities are at the center of Lisa Jerzyk’s leadership philosophy and style, and as her intern at Catholic Charities, I have seen her exemplify these leadership skills. Although she is new to her leadership role as director of volunteer relations, Lisa is an emerging leader. She has had many experiences and mentors in her past that helped shape her character. During her undergraduate at Dominican University, Lisa studied corporate communications and ministry. The background in business and an interest in ministry propelled her into nonprofit administration at Catholic Charities. These experiences shaped Lisa’s leadership style, which she labeled as servant leadership.

From my experience in the office, I can say that she has been a model of servant leadership. Often when I have interacted with Lisa, she has taken the time to ask me how I am or how she can help me. As a servant leader, Lisa is always attentive of others and her service towards them. In addition to her servant leadership qualities, Lisa emphasized the need to be comfortable and vulnerable at the same time. A vulnerable leader must also delegate so to empower others. Working with many volunteers during the supper program, I have seen Lisa delegate tasks because she knows she cannot do it all by herself.

While Lisa’s actions speak for her leadership capabilities, she offered some advice on how to become a better leader. First, listen to leaders around you. Other people are our greatest resource in learning what works and what does not. Second, take cues of good and bad things. Leading is a process that requires learning from mistakes and taking advantage of the right opportunities. An effective leader learns and grows from experience.

Throughout my internship, I have seen Lisa put her leadership style into action, especially at the Tuesday night supper. Lisa calmly interacts with the number of volunteers and clients, but also takes charge in assigning roles. In addition, Lisa does not place herself above anyone else and takes the time to participate in the service. This shows great humility, a quality I think is essential for a good leader to have. I admire Lisa’s dedication to serving the whole person, and I hope to emulate her example of servant leadership.
