Psychological Underpinnings: A Task at Hand

Write a 1250-1500 word essay explaining 

i)        the psychological/cognitive theorists relating to the Task Analysis (support all of your claims and observations with solid references and details),

ii)       the Task Analysis process, its pros/cons, and how you used it for each step of this activity,

iii)     your observations of the effectiveness of your lesson plan as it relates to the successfulness (or failure) of the lesson with the learner(s), and

iv)     three self-suggestions for improving the process.

SIOP Power Point Presentation

For this benchmark, create an in-depth, 15-20 slide PowerPoint presentation to inform other teachers in your school district of the benefits of using the SIOP Model as a teaching framework. This presentation should elaborate on the empirical research that shows the benefits of the SIOP framework when used with general education students as well as with ELLs. Your presentation should include:

1. A title slide
2. A brief description of socioeconomic, political, ethical, and legal influences on instruction for ELLs.
3. At least one brief video showing SIOP strategies being used with students (any grade level or subject area).
4. The eight interrelated components of the SIOP model and their application with teaching examples for each component.  The eight SIOP components are as follows:
   1. Lesson Preparation

   3. Comprehensible Input
   4. Strategies
   5. Interaction
   6. Practice and Application
   7. Lesson Delivery
   8. Review and Assessment
5. Include presenter’s notes, in-text citations, and a reference slide that contains three to five sources from the required readings or the GCU Library.

Using SEI Strategies in a SIOP Lesson Plan

For this benchmark, create a SIOP lesson plan that integrates students' reading levels, cultural background, language objectives, content objectives, and best instructional practices for ELLs, as well as authentic assessment for a grade level and content area of your choice.

Use the SIOP lesson plan template, located on the College of Education site in the Student Success Center, and the "Class Profile” to complete this assignment.

From the “Class Profile,” specify a grade-level of your students. Choose a performance objective from the ELA Common Core State Standards to create the content objective for your lesson.

Select the English language proficiency standards based on the needs of your students. Consider applicable language acquisition stages of development in designing your lesson plan.

Special Education Services

Choose one of the four case studies provided to analyze and reflect upon.

• Sarah is in the 7^th-grade. She has an intellectual disability. Her academic skills are at the 2^nd-grade level. She has significant speech delays. People who do not regularly interact with her have a difficult time understanding her. When Sarah is not able to communicate with others, she gets very frustrated and angry. This can lead to her becoming physically aggressive. 
• Gabriel is in kindergarten. He has cerebral palsy and is in a wheelchair, wears a diaper, and is tube fed. He is nonverbal, but is able to communicate some through eye contact. Gabriel can make choices between two things this way. He has very limited hand strength and needs to work on grasping things on his own. 
• Micah is in the 11^th-grade. He has learning disabilities in the areas of written expression and reading comprehension and reads at the 9^th-grade level. Micah is very social and is involved in extracurricular activities in school. He does not like to receive accommodations that make him stand out from his peers. 
• Jacob is in the 5^th-grade. He has ADHD and an emotional/behavioral disorder. He gets along with very young kids and adults, but he struggles with getting along with other kids his age. He is very aggressive and gets in people’s faces. Jacob does not pick up on social cues from others and does not recognize when he is making them uncomfortable. He speaks very loudly. His academic skills are at the 3^rd-grade level. He does not put much effort into his work because he does not see the point in learning or going to school. His frustration can easily and quickly turn into a temper tantrum and it takes him a very long time to calm done. A large part of his school day is spent working through emotional/behavioral issues.

Based on what you learned about special education including, inclusive and self-contained classrooms, write a 1,500-1,750-word essay. Address the questions below pertaining to the placement:

• Summarize the placement option and discuss why it would or would not work for the student in the case study.

• What type of related services would the student require and why?
• What type of technology could be used to support the student within assessment, planning and delivery?

• What type of classroom setting would be most appropriate for the student and why?
