Diversity Lesson Plan

Context: This artifact is a lesson plan that was created during the spring of 2004 under the direction of Dr. Karl Campbell.  The lesson is a portion of a unit completed in Dr. Campbell's History of North Carolina class.  The unit focuses on the coastal plain region of North Carolina and particularly the diversity of the state.  The lesson plan below introduces students to the meaning of diversity, and how they fit into the diverse population of North Carolina.

Impact: This lesson integrates the study of people into the classic belief of Social Studies as a study of History.  I will be able to use this lesson in my future classroom as a tool for creating a sense of community among the students.  By getting to know each student in a way that connects their past to North Carolina's history, the classroom will all be connected by a common thread, thus showing each student that they are a part of the classroom community.
NCSOCS alignment: Social Studies; Grade 4: 1.02, 2.01, 2.02, 2.03, 2.04, 3.04, 5.03.

NCDPI Alignment:
Standard 14-1:
This artifact demonstrates my ability to understand and respect the diverse attitudes of the families within my classroom.  By including each of my students within the lesson plan and involving all of their diverse lifestyles, I am showing respect for each of the lifestyles within my future classrooms.
Standard 14-2:This artifact includes classroom discussion of each of the family styles within the classroom.  I addressed indicator two through the gathering of data by each student about their family's history.
Standard 14-4: This artifact demonstrates my ability to explore the different viewpoints within my classroom.  Also this lesson plan gets student's family members involved by having the students complete surveys of their family members.
Standard 14-6: This artifact demonstrates my ability to adapt this lesson for future students.  Because the lesson focuses primarily on the diversity within the classroom, it changes with each group of students.
