Integrated Unit

Context:This artifact was created during the fall of 2005 in CI 4000.  The class was under the direction of Dr. Lynne Bercaw and the unit was taught during my internship in the 5th grade at Blue Ridge Elementary School.
The students participated in a variety of activities such a class discussions, creative writing, interpretive movement, mock-trading, and an online museum.  The students were introduced to the different Native American groups in the United States and explored the ways each group was unique.

Impact: In the future, I will be able to use this unit as a guide for other units I create.  I may also be able to use this unit again in a fifth grade setting or could adapt individual lessons to fit into other curricula. Curriculum objectives addressed in the unit are as follows.
NCSOCS alignment: Grade 5 Social Studies: 1.02, 1.06, 3.03, 4.02, 4.03 English Language Arts: 1.01, 1.02, 1.03, 1.04, 2.01

NCDPI Alignment:
Standard 7-1: This artifact addressed the indicator because I was able to plan and execute the pacing and alignment of the NC Standard Course of Study in a unit of six lesson plans.
Standard 7-2: I was able to address this indicator by integrating the Language Arts curriculum into the lessons which are based on the Social Studies curriculum.
Standard 7-3: I addressed this indicator by pre-assessing the students knowledge, misconceptions, and interests of Native Americans with a KWL+ chart, so that I could build off of the information they gave me.
Standard 7-4: I addressed this indicator by teaching in a variety of styles.  I did not teach in any way twice.  Everyday the students were doing something new.
Standard 7-6: I addressed this indicator by planning for diverse learners.  Each lesson plan includes a section of modifications for higher and lower level learners.
Standard 7-7: This indicator is addressed throughout each lesson of the unit.  Students are assessed each day by a variety of assessment strategies as noted in the assessment section of each lesson plan.
