Indicator 4b

4b. The program is validated by Virginia business/industry representatives.

Artifact 25 - I.d. how CTE Adv. Council or others were involved in program implementation

We have had strong support from the local veterinary community, as described in criterion 1b. 7). Many have contributed ideas as to equipment that would be beneficial to student learning.  We purchased a Doppler unit as recommended in 2008 following an advisory meeting.  The minutes of the meeting are included as an artifact.  We purchased a teaching microscope for the program following a recommendation from an advisory member.  Advisory members reviewed our curriculum last year, and we incorporated more instruction on dentistry based upon their recommendations.

Many local veterinarians have donated literature, pathology specimens, anatomy models, and their time.  Veterinarians have spoken with students about the canine genome project, helped students to practice peripheral venipuncture; and given an acupuncture demonstration.  In 2013, the zoo veterinarian for the Norfolk Zoological Park gave a presentation to students on zoo animal medicine.  An inspector for the American Animal Hospital Association spoke to students last year during the section on hospital design and management.  He also donated a set of books on careers available to the veterinary technician.

Many current and former students are employed in the field by local veterinarians, especially advisory board members.  These hospitals also allow students to job shadow during the career exploration section.  A list of students hired by advisory board members is submitted as an artifact.
