Standard 2.3 Mathematics

The lesson I chose to show the Math Standard 2.3 is titled, Algebraic Expressions. This lesson is to be taught in a fifth grade classroom. In this lesson students use order of operations, algebra, multiplication, and data analysis. Through playing a game students will engage in connections, problem solving, and communication. A die will be rolled to represent the variable needed for the algebraic expression they chose to work with during their game. Each round will include an algebraic equation that will need to be solved in order to prove the winner.

I have attached the lesson plan as a Word Document and PDF file located at the bottom of this page.

This lesson was taught with another teacher to a class of twenty students. Although the lesson was planned and created together, we never had an opportunity to teach the lesson in front of students before our time presenting in the class. We found out right away that our instructions were a little unclear and needed to be rephrased for students to understand. The cause for the confusing instructions gave us an outcome we had not expected. Some partners understood that they were to work together, using the same numbers rolled with their die as their variables. It is important to give clear directions with this lesson. I learned that I need to speak slower when giving directions, and provide an example trial run for the students to see how the game will unfold.
