Content Rationale

Purpose for having students learns about this:

I think it is important for my Kindergarten students to learn about the five senses because the five senses are a huge influence on exploring the natural world and what is around us.  By learning about their own five senses, students will also learn how to identify their different senses and how each sense is used.  In addition, learning about the five senses in Kindergarten is an important tool for young students to be able to understand because they will be using these skills throughout their academic careers and beyond.

Knowledge of content and standards:

My learning outcome for the unit is that the students will be able to identify and characterize the five senses through observing the natural world.  I believe that this is a suitable learning outcome for my students because during my lessons they are going to be able to understand, identify, and describe their five senses through a variety of age appropriate examples and hands-on activities.  Along with my learning outcome being specifically tailored to my students, it also is completely tied together with the Oregon State Standards, which is K.3 Specific Inquiry: Science explores the natural world through observation.  K.3S.2: Make observations about the natural world.

Relationship between learning needs assessment tools/activities:

While planning out and teaching my lesson plans, I will put a large amount of effort and time to certainly make my lessons appropriate for each student.  I want to be fully aware of modifications that I will need to make with specific students and work hard to make my lessons the best learning environment for each student.  By doing this I plan to not only know all of my students and their culture, but to get familiar with their interests, ability ranges, and development.  I will have discussions with my mentor teacher and get any advice from her as I can about each student.  I believe having this communication with my mentor teacher will help me gain a better understanding and relationship with my students so that I can truly teach my unit to the best of my knowledge and ability.

Goals and Objectives

Goals:

State Benchmarks:  Science K.1 Structure and Function: The natural world includes living and non-living things.  K.1P.1:  Compare and contrast characteristics of living and non-living things.

Work sample goals (2-3):

  • SWBAT identify and characterize the five senses through observing the natural world through hands on activities.
  • Knowledge (Bloom’s)

  • SWBAT relate any of the five senses by comparing an example from the class lessons to a real life experience.
  • Knowledge (Bloom’s)

Learning Objectives:

Performance Outcomes for students:  By the end of the unit students will be able to identify and characterize the five senses through observing the natural world.  I will be able to distinguish this by assessing each student’s portfolio, a combination of all of the students work throughout the unit.

Lesson #1:

Objective:  SWBAT identify one of the five senses by pointing out eyes, ears, nose, mouth, and/or fingers by understanding.

Domain: Psychomotor

Bloom’s Taxonomy:  Identify (Knowledge)

Lesson #2:

Objectives:  SWBAT verbally describe how sight is used as one of the five senses by giving an example of what they see with their eyes.

Domain: Affective

Bloom’s Taxonomy:  Describe (Knowledge)

Lesson #3:

Objectives:  SWBAT recognize different sounds that relate to hearing by naming a variety of sounds.

Domain: Cognitive

Bloom’s Taxonomy:  Recognize (Knowledge)

Lesson #4:

Objectives:  SWBAT distinguish different smells and what students can smell and different things they smell.

Domain: Cognitive

Bloom’s Taxonomy:  Distinguish (Comprehension)

Lesson #5:

Objectives:  SWBAT explain different textures, temperatures, and feeling (soft, smooth, rough) of different objects by observing objects with their hands.

Domain: Affective

Bloom’s Taxonomy:  Explain (Comprehension)

Lesson #6:

Objectives:  SWBAT categorize the different tastes (sweet, sour, salty, or spicy), textures (soft, crunchy), and temperature (hot or cold) by tasting a variety of different foods.

Domain: Psychomotor

Bloom’s Taxonomy:  Categorize (Analysis)

Lesson #7:

Objectives:  SWBAT explain what each of the five senses do and where each sense is located on the human body.

Domain: Affective
